Ongoing efforts in Trinidad for international non-profit organizations

Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA – The international non-profit organization Family Agriculture Resources Management Services (FARMS) was pleased to provide more than 25 rural farmers with hand, power and gas tools to run a more efficient farm operation. With the help of Pierre CharlesFARMS, Caribbean Program Manager from Arima, Trinity we were able to provide nearly 5,000 books. melons and other fruits at the Center Pont de l’Espoir, the Center Casade Corazon and the Center Memisa. The three centers welcome children, adults with disabilities and the elderly. According to Charlerie, “the inconsistent water supply has been a hindrance for farmers during the dry season, the tools we provided have reduced labor and increased yields.”

Additionally, FARMS was able to convert two storage facilities into a refrigeration facility for two local fishermen, Mr. Julien Lafond of Arima and M. Dominique Reyes of Valence, Trinity. Both Mr.Lafond and Mr. Reyes said that having refrigeration units would increase the shelf life of their fish harvest by several weeks, thereby increasing their annual income.

FARMS is an international non-profit organization that provides legal services to rural farmers to conserve land for future family farmers while reducing hunger in the farming community.

“Since 2015, we have been providing services to various Caribbean nations, the need has increased. The fact that most Caribbean nations depend on American imports, which leaves many citizens vulnerable, proving that the need is great, ”said Jillian HishawFounding Director of FARMS

Since its inception in 2013, FARMS has purchased and donated nearly two million pounds of product, provided nearly $500,000 in emergency aid to farmers and saved rural farms from foreclosure. The multi-award-winning organization also recently received a grant from the MacArthur Foundation and the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Foundation.
